Some Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) patients have scoliosis running in the family, but many don't. I am the only person in my extended family diagnosed with scoliosis, so I want to know the odds that my future children might have scoliosis. Researchers often believe that AIS can be due to a spectrum of genetic risk variants, ranging from very rare or even private to very common. I searched the internet, but most scoliosis heritability studies were twin based, which is not a good predictor for my case as I don't have a family history. So I researched using genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and I hoped it would predict the odds better for patients without a family history. Please see the abstract of my research at https://www.bentnotbroken.net/heritability, and hopefully, you find it useful.

Happy June everyone! Do you know that June is National Scoliosis Awareness Month? It is aimed to increase the awareness about scoliosis condition within the community and promote early detection and intervention. I plan to do something special each week in June to observe national scoliosis awareness month. In the first week of June, I started to use my yoga mat again and learned a couple of new yoga routines. I bought the mat six years ago when I began to take Schroth sessions with my physical therapist. Please share what you plan to do for Scoliosis Awareness Month!

Wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Hope you all enjoy the holidays with your friends and family. The first resources that I'd like to share with the community is Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Children's provides care to scoliosis children regardless of their families' ability to pay or insurance status. Do not let your family's financial means to defer your scoliosis treatment. If your family can't afford transportation and accommodations for your care at Shriners Children's, Shriners has partnership with community organizations to assist you in transportation and accommodation. If you are a scoliosis patient outside USA who can't afford treatment, Shriners Children's may be able to find sponsors and financial supporters for your treatment. Check out its page on international request for care. If you and your family would like to help Shriners Children's to treat children without insurance, please consider donate to Shriners.

Did you have hard time with your braces? Were you afraid of wearing it to school? Do you wear your brace inside or outside your clothes? I had hard time when I first started to wear brace at 11 years old. As a very self conscious girl, I was trying to get blend into my new middle school. Just thinking of wearing the bulky brace into school made me horrified. I gave my purple brace a name Poppy. With a lovely name, Poppy became less intimidating. On my first day to wear Poppy to school, I hid her under my loose clothes. In front of the mirrors, I made sure she was not noticeable. Yeah, I and Poppy survived the first day with nobody noticing my Poppy! Over the time, I have had six braces. The patterns and colors I selected showed my changing aesthetic taste. From starry night to flowery prints to geometric shapes then to plain color, I grew and so did my braces. I gave each of them a name, as they were friends to witness my scoliosis journey. However, Poppy was the most unique one among all of them. Can you tell who is Poppy?
